The Guild of Food Writers Cookery Book Award

Can you imagine my excitement when the invitation came through to ask if I’d like to join the panel of judges to find the best cookery book of the year from The Guild of Food Writers? I was thrilled and immediately accepted their invite. I have been a member of The Guild now for a couple of years and it’s always so exciting to meet up with other members to talk food, celebrate creativity in the kitchen and to see what the latest trends are.

With over 100 books entered into this category we were given a set of criteria to guide us along the path to find a winner. What was so engaging was the passion in each book which came directly from the writers and so absorbing to see in their recipes.

Over a few weeks I was to read the books and try out as many recipes as I could in order to find my top ten. The scores from each judge were then totted up and a four were presented to members as the shortlists. There were:-

  • My Aromatic Kitchen by Kille Enna (Prestel Publishing)

  • Caravan: Dining All Day by Laura Harper-Hinton, Miles Kirby and Chris Ammermann (Square Peg)

  • The Modern Cook’s Year by Anna Jones (4th Estate)

  • Lisboeta by Nuno Mendes (Bloomsbury Publishing)

On June 18th on an absolutly glorious summer evening at Holland Opera House, London the winner was announced and Anna Jones was awarded with the prize.

My girls and I adore Anna Jones work. Her strawberry and rose thumbprint cookies are perfect for little ones to bake up, the chedder, swede and wild garlic scones are delicious in the springtime and I love each of Anna’s flavour maps. They bring a real sense of purpose when cooking and pairing up flavours. I wrote in my final marking sheet:

“Such a wonderful cookbook. Anna has totally reinvented cooking with vegetables. Her recipes have even been appreciated by my meat-loving husband! The suggestions on how to put together salads, the best of seasonal food lists, and the all-round softness of Anna’s words makes this such a readable book. Anna certainly knows how to cook and she’s created another fabulous book!”

So as today is Thanksgiving Day I’d like to say a huge thank you to you as readers who continue to take the time to read my blog and bake my recipes with your little ones. We those words of thanks I’d love to giveaway a copy of Anna Jones’ The Modern Cook’s Year.
